Owning a property at La Manga Club offers far more than over 300 days of sunshine a year. It includes access to three championship golf courses and a private Mediterranean beach, while placing one of the most remarkable cultural destinations in south eastern Spain less than an hour away. The Madina Mursiya Interpretation Centre, located in the Santa Eulalia district of Murcia city, offers the kind of visit that reshapes how visitors see the region, and it is increasingly being added to the list of things to do near La Manga Club beyond the resort itself.
The history behind the centre is as fascinating as the visit itself. On 25 June 825, Emir Abderramán II founded a new city on a bend of the River Segura, chosen for its strategic position controlling communication routes and the fertility of its agricultural land. That city, Madina Mursiya, went on to become one of the most powerful Islamic kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula, reaching its height in the 11th century under Ibn Mardanís, the Wolf King, whose territories stretched from Tarragona to Huelva. For centuries, the remains of this medieval city lay buried several metres beneath the streets of Santa Eulalia, until an extensive archaeological excavation lasting over five years brought them back to light.
What you can see at the Madina Mursiya Interpretation Centre
The result of the archaeological excavation at Madina Mursiya is a remarkable underground museum, covering more than 1,600 square metres and featuring a 200-metre path built on elevated wooden walkways. Along the route, visitors can see an original stretch of medieval city wall with its full defensive system, including the barbican, outer wall and bastion, as well as reconstructions of key city gates such as the Puerta del Toro, Puerta del Sol and the famous Puerta de las Siete Puertas, through which James I the Conqueror entered the city in 1266. Also visible is an Islamic cemetery, or maqbara, with around fifty graves in varying states of preservation, dating from between the 9th and 11th centuries, close to the city’s founding period.
What sets this visit apart is its immersive nature. The Murcia City Council has created a multisensory experience in which large scale audiovisual projections recreate daily life in the Andalusi city, while carefully selected scents accompany each stage of the route. The smell of mint evokes the morning freshness of the orchard surrounding the walls, leather and spices recreate the bustle of the barbican, and orange blossom fills the brighter sections of the journey, as it has done in Murcian springs since Islamic times. Entry is free, and guided tours can be booked in advance by calling 968 22 16 12. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 19:30, and Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00.
The perfect excursion from the resort
For those wondering what to do near La Manga Club beyond the resort’s exceptional facilities, Madina Mursiya offers a close and informative option. The journey from La Manga Club to Murcia city takes no more than 50 minutes by car, making it ideal for a half day excursion without the need for extensive planning. Once in the city, the visit can easily be combined with a walk through the historic centre, a stop at the Roman Theatre or the Museum of the Forum, and lunch in one of the restaurants in Santa Eulalia, where several venues have created Andalusi inspired menus to mark the opening of the centre. The neighbourhood itself has undergone a notable revival thanks to the Museum project and now boasts an authentic, lively atmosphere quite apart from the city’s more tourism-oriented areas.
Madina Mursiya forms part of the strategic Murcia Medieval project, which aims to connect medieval heritage with the contemporary city and is accompanied by other initiatives such as the Fortresses of the Wolf King in Monteagudo. If you have already enjoyed other cultural excursions from the resort, such as the underwater archaeology exhibition at ARQVA in Cartagena or the Ricote Valley, this visit is not to be missed.
