In 825, Emir Abd-ar-Rahman II founded a city called Madīnat Mursīya on the banks of the Segura River. It soon became a strategic enclave. Today, twelve centuries later, and just a few kilometers from your property at La Manga Club, you can take part in Murcia’s celebration of its history with a program combining heritage, innovation, and Mediterranean pride.
The “Murcia 1200” program has been ongoing in 2025 and was designed to turn the city into a “living museum” of its twelve centuries of life. Various activities have showcased its three principal cultures—Islamic, Jewish, and Christian—its agriculture, and its Mediterranean heritage. The official anniversary agenda includes events through the end of December, including exhibitions, conferences, tours, and cultural activities throughout the city, so we encourage you to set aside at least one day to visit so you don’t miss out. The series of conferences at the City Museum, exhibitions on Andalusian Murcia, guided tours of La Contraparada, and dance and music performances at the Romea Theater and the Glorieta de España will continue until the end of the year. The complete schedule can be found at 1200.murcia.es.
For owners and guests of La Manga Club, the proximity to the city of Murcia—just a 40-minute drive away—makes it possible to celebrate the anniversary and return home the same day. We recommend a visit to the Madina Mursiya Interpretation Center, which houses the remains of the 12th-century wall, the Gate of Seven Doors, and the maqbara, the oldest Muslim cemetery in the city. We’ve already mentioned in other posts how living in a resort like La Manga Club offers the privileged combination of proximity to cities and the tranquility and comfort of a high-end home by the sea. From your property at La Manga Club, you can join in the latest public cultural events for the celebration and learn a little more about the history that has made the heritage of the area so rich.
If you’re already lucky enough to be an owner, take a moment to check out the official “Murcia 1200” agenda and select at least one event to attend before the end of the year. The exhibitions, guided tours, and concerts are unique occasions that will only happen once. And if you’re not yet an owner but are considering investing in the resort, visiting Murcia in the last weeks of 2025 may just help you make your final decision. If you’re passionate about history and knowledge, there’s nothing better than delving into the historical roots of the Iberian Peninsula.
